Next.js in one sentence
Next.js is a framework built on React and maintained by Vercel. It renders pages ahead of time where it can (very fast, easy for Google to index) and on demand where it must (accounts, dashboards, live data). One tool covers both the marketing site and the application.
Next.js or WordPress?
| Next.js | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Static pages served from a CDN, very fast | Depends on theme and plugins; often heavy |
| Security | No public admin to attack on a static site | Frequent target; plugin updates to keep up with |
| Custom work | No ceiling: it is code | Bounded by themes and plugins |
| Editing content | Through a connected CMS, or content files | Very simple, built in |
| Applications (accounts, billing, AI) | Natural fit | Possible, but you leave the happy path fast |
If your main need is publishing articles yourself, WordPress is still a good choice and we will say so. Once there is a product, users, careful multilingual content or real speed requirements, Next.js is sturdier and cheaper to maintain.
What it changes for SEO
- The HTML is complete on first load: Google reads everything without running JavaScript.
- Titles, descriptions, hreflang, sitemap and structured data are generated per page, in code.
- Images are resized and compressed automatically, which helps Core Web Vitals.
- Localised URLs (/fr/…, /en/…) are straightforward — this site is one.
